this is an email we received as a reaction to Makhancora's article Why Are The Original Books Changed? from Ujjvala Prabhu. Makhancora's response follows below
Dandavat Pranams Prabhus!
Once again you folks are making the same exact argument that the rascal editors of today are making and you don't seem to realize it. They also claim that they are reverting the books to the "original intention"! The fact that Srila Prabhupada authorized the editions we have now, before his passing, from which he did lecture and from which he preached and ordered others to distribute and preach from is good enough authority for any of us. Do you folks actually think that the analogies utilized are the same as distributing his own works, or actually stating that "all you need for go back to godhead is in my books? Did he mean "my books will send you back, but only after some future devotees fix them nicely for me after my departure, since right now they are simply full of errors"? Did Prabhupada tell his disciples to distribute Ramakrishna Mission books also?? All logic and honest assessments point to the fact that Srila Prabhupada wanted these things to remain stable and not change. Once you open the door to this nonsense of questioning and "finding the original intent" then you are also in Arsa Prayoga.
Not only that, but again, the door you are opening also leads to; who is authorized to "restore" the "original books"? This issue of authority is crucial, since none of you had ANY vapu contact with Srila Prabhupada nor were any of you directly given authority (neither directly nor indirectly) to work on the books like the BBT and Jayadvaita Swami. In other words, in the competition of "authority", they will always win and we will always lose for obvious reasons that ANY court of law in any country can make quite clear. Stating that "we are loyal and they are not" is not enough in these things because we are not talking about the practice of our path, we are talking about authority and legitimacy.
What this article does is actually TERRIBLE for the advancement of Srila Prabhupada's movement and he would have found it deeply offensive because it throws a HUGE wrench into the credibility of his books and even the teachings themselves. By opening this pandora's box, you are single-handedly diminishing the importance and value of Srila Prabhupada's books and also allowing plenty of other rascals to make the same arguments and change even further. Do you folks actually believe that Srila Prabhupada would have accepted this bogus notion on his behalf?

"No, Lord Shiva is the greatest." "No, Lord Vishnu is the greatest." "No, Lord Brahma is the greatest." This is the eternal fight amongst sympathisers of the Vedas and Hinduism. However, this kind of arguing is not going to establish one´s authority. If we would like to establish the final conclusion on this matter then sentimental feeling must go away. The conclusion must be established by authority, and in the case of the Absolute Truth, by the supreme authority. The supreme authority must be perfect in order to provide a perfect conclusion. Amongt the many scriptures in the world, the Vedas are the most ancient and the most erudite. They are also recognized by great authorities from different universities, by religious leaders, politicians, scientists and many others. If so many different groups of people recommend the Vedas, then it must evoke an interest in us. "There must be something about that. Let me check it out."
Although Srila Prabhupada clearly expressed that the initiations on his behalf through priests (rtviks) should continue even after his physical departure, many devotees find it difficult to accept and insist that one must have a so-called "living" guru besides Srila Prabhupada. What is the need of another guru, if the teachings left by Srila Prabhupada in his books, audio recordings, letters, videos are complete and perfectly understandable? The following is a collection of testimonies and statements from early disciples of Srila Prabhupada that shed light on this matter.
(On the left is the "July 9th Letter signed by Srila Prabhupada, settig up the rtvik system of initiations for ISKCON)
TAMAL KRSNA GOSWAMI
Actually, Prabhupada never appointed any gurus. He didn't appoint eleven gurus. He appointed eleven ritviks. He never appointed them gurus. Myself and the other GBC have done the greatest disservice to this movement the last three years because we interpreted the appointment of ritviks as the appointment of gurus. What actually happened, I'll explain. I explained it, but the interpretation is wrong. What actually happened was that Prabhupada mentioned that he might be appointing some ritviks, so the GBC met for various reasons and they went to Prabhupada - five or six of us. We asked him, "Srila Prabhupada, after your departure, if we accept disciples, whose disciples will they be, your disciples or mine?"
"You rogue, do you dare beat an innocent cow because Lord Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna, the carrier of the Gāṇḍīva bow, are out of sight? Since you are beating the innocent in a secluded place, you are considered a culprit and therefore deserve to be killed."
PURPORT by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada
In a civilization where God is conspicuously banished, and there is no devotee warrior like Arjuna, the associates of the age of Kali take advantage of this lawless kingdom and arrange to kill innocent animals like the cow in secluded slaughterhouses. Such murderers of animals stand to be condemned to death by the order of a pious king like Mahārāja Parīkṣit. For a pious king, the culprit who kills an animal in a secluded place is punishable by the death penalty, exactly like a murderer who kills an innocent child in a secluded place.

.It is an understood principle in the Vedic tradition that the words of the spiritual master should not be changed in any way. The guru is not an ordinary man subjected to the four defects of human frailty. Therefore whatever he writes is perfect. Being in direct connection with Krsna, his words are dictated by the Lord Himself.
Srila Prabhupada in his manifested lila engaged some of his early disciples in the service of editing his manuscripts and transcripts of his dictation tapes. They were to correct the technicalities of the language for clarity and never change any of the intended meanings in his books. Being initiated and therefore somehow already familiar with the philosophy of Krsna consciousness by following Srila Prabhupada, they would understand the meaning from his rough manuscripts or dictations and then present the same meaning in a polished and grammatically correct English. That's all. Since these very early editors were able to understand Srila Prabhupada's words quite clearly, in no way should Srila Prabhupada's original words be considered incomplete or incomprehensible. As the early editors could understand, certainly new devotees can also understand, especially now when the full body of Srila Prabhupada's vani can be now also consulted with lectures, conversations, and other books.

There are different kinds of 'Yajna' recommended in different ages. The one which is recommended in this age of Kali (iron age of quarrel and fight) is the performance of yajna called the 'Samkeertan Yajna' which is a process of chanting and hearing the transcendental Name etc. of Godhead.
Srila Prabhupada on public chanting of Hare Krsna:
Please continue your efforts in Krishna Consciousness with great determination. Yes, Patience is is a qualification in the successful execution of devotional service. So study our literatures, discuss philosophical points and problems with your God-brothers, and especially chant regularly sixteen rounds daily without offense and go on Sankirtana. We must always remember that chanting of Hare Krishna Mahamantra is our life and soul.
(Letter to: Madhusudana -- Los Angeles 30 January, 1970)
You have written to say that your Sankirtana Party is truly an ocean of transcendental knowledge and bliss. So everywhere they say Sankirtana is nice. I have received letter from London, and we are experiencing here also. So this is our life and soul. It is nice that you are visiting two university towns regularly for Sankirtana and lectures. Such news engladdens me.
(Letter to: Krsna dasa -- Los Angeles 22 June, 1970)
Regarding your questions about Sankirtana Party, I think you should try to always have Sankirtana going on. All other things are subsidiary. This chanting is our life and soul, so we must arrange our program now so that there will be as much chanting on the streets and at college engagements as possible.
