…The saṅkīrtana movement inaugurated by Lord Caitanya is a transcendental pastime of the Lord. “By it I live simultaneously to preach and popularize this movement in the material world.” In that saṅkīrtana movement of Lord Caitanya, Nityānanda and Advaita are His expansions, and Gadādhara and Śrīvāsa are His internal and marginal potencies. The living entities are also called marginal potency because they have, potentially, two attitudes-namely the tendency to surrender unto Kṛṣṇa and the tendency to become independent of Him. Due to the propensity for material enjoyment, the living entity becomes contaminated by the material world. When a living entity is dominated by a desire for material enjoyment and becomes entangled in material life, he is subjected to the threefold miseries of material existence. He is just like a seed sown in the earth. If a seed is overpowered by too much water, there is no possibility of its fructifying. Similarly, if a man is captivated by material enjoyment, and even if the seed of such enjoyment is within the heart of the conditioned soul, he can be overpowered by a flood of transcendental activities performed in love of God. In this way his potential seed cannot fructify into a conditional life of material existence. The conditioned living entities in the material world, especially in the present age of Kali, are overpowered by the flood of love of God inaugurated by Lord Caitanya and His associates. In this series we show various changes found in the 1972 edition of the Bhagavad-gita As It Is and how they change the meaning of Srila Prabhupada's words. It is understood that while editing, sometimes words are changed for clarity. Therefore, in these series of articles, we try to avoid spending too much time focusing on changes that alter the words with the purpose of giving the intended meaning in the original writing more force. With each change discussed we present the original spoken dictation as recorded by Srila Prabhupada on February the 19-20th 1966, the same passage in the 1972 Macmillan edition and finally our humble commentary.
Now, Arjuna says, after hearing Bhagavad-gita from the Supreme Personality of Godhead, he accepts Krsna as param brahma, the Supreme Brahman. Brahman. Every living being is Brahman, but the supreme living being or the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the Supreme Brahman or supreme living being. And param dhama. Param dhama means He is the supreme rest of everything. And pavitram. Pavitram means He is pure from material contamination. And He's addressed as purusam. Purusam means the supreme enjoyer; sasvatam, sasvata means from very beginning, He's the first person; divyam, transcendental; devam, the Supreme Personality of Godhead; ajam, never born; vibhum, the greatest.
Introduction to Gitopanisad (Earliest Recording of Srila Prabhupada in the Bhaktivednta Archives) Bhagavad-gita Introduction, New York, February 19-20, 1966.
After hearing Bhagavad-gita from the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Arjuna accepted Krsna as Param Brahma, the Supreme Brahman. Every living being is Brahman, but the supreme living being, or the Supreme Personality of Godhead, is the Supreme Brahman. Param dhama means that He is the supreme rest or abode of everything, pavitram means that He is pure, untainted by material contamination, purusam means that He is the supreme enjoyer, divyam, transcendental, adi-devam, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, ajam, the unborn, and vibhum, the greatest, the all-pervading.
In this particular section Srila Prabhupada is explaining the following verse:
param brahma param dhama
pavitram paramam bhavan
purusam sasvatam divyam
adi-devam ajam vibhum
Arjuna said: You are the Supreme Brahman, the ultimate, the supreme abode and purifier, the Absolute Truth and the eternal divine person. You are the primal God, transcendental and original, and You are the unborn and all-pervading beauty.
(Bg 10.13 1972 edition)
As we see the editor has omitted the word sasvatam. Although Srila Prabhupada does translate this word in his dictation tape, the editor has simply left it out in the 1972 edition. This word is part of the sloka and it does not make any sense to remove it, especially when Srila Prabhupada himself has translated. Even in the word for word translation of this sloka in the 1972 edition the word sasvatam is translated as "original". Srila Prabhupada dictates here "from the very beginning" The meaning is the same. Why was the word taken out? The translation of the sloka is incomplete without it. Srila Prabhupada dictated it, it should be kept as it is.

So in everything, if you analyze, you'll find some particular quality. That is his religion. That is his religion. So we are living entities. Forget yourself. Forget yourself that you are Christian, "I am Hindu," or Muslim, or Mussalman, or Buddhist. Forget yourself! "I am living entity." When we come to this point, that is called liberation. That is called liberation. Sarvopadhi-vinirmuktam [Cc. Madhya 19.170]. When we become free from all these designations, that is called liberation. Liberation means nothing more, the conception of getting free from these designations which we have acquired from the association of material nature.
That is called designation. Because I have got a particular body, therefore I have got so many designations. I call myself a man, or animal, or I have got some name, given by my parents. Or because I am born in some particular country I designate myself to belong to that country, and because I accept some particular faith, so I designate myself to that faith. In so many ways we are now designated. This designation should be given up. When designations are given up, then we are free, pure soul. In that pure soul the religion is to serve the Supreme.

Devotees From The B.L.I.S.S. Performing Sankirtan-Yajna (Chanting of The Holy Names of Krsna) In The City Of Malaga, Spain
by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada
This is called sravanam kirtanam smaranam [SB 7.5.23]. The process, bhakti-yoga process, is in the beginning sravanam -- means "hearing." Just like you are hearing me. I am talking on the spiritual understanding of self-realization concept -- you are hearing. You hear for some time, then you can get convinced after hearing for sufficient time. We have got one hour of our time -- that is not sufficient -- but still, if you take this opportunity for chanting with us, you'll hear. This is called service to the mind. So you don't require any previous qualifications or to follow any hard-and-fast rules. Simply you try to chant this.
There is no taxation. There is no price for the chanting. You don't have to pay me $50 or $100 or $2000, then I give you some special mantra. This process is open for everyone; you can utilize it and accept it. There is no charges, there is no price, there is no [indistinct], and you can practice it at home or on the street or anywhere you are walking. You can chant Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna while you are getting dressed. You can chant Hare Krsna during while you are eating. You also can chant Hare Krsna -- this is twenty-four hours' meditation, and it is very easy. It is not that you officially sit down and meditate on something, perfectly engaged, if by this meditation you can advance to some extent. No.
It is meditation for twenty-four hours. You have to promote your mind in such a way that you cannot think other than Krsna. This is Krsna consciousness. These boys are trying; they are reading in Krsna consciousness, they are working in Krsna consciousness, they are sleeping in Krsna consciousness, they are serving in Krsna consciousness, they're walking in Krsna consciousness. Nothing has happened, but Krsna consciousness is going on continuously. This process we are promoting, that you may kindly accept this process, and you will benefit. There is no price, there is no taxation, and there is no loss. Because you American boys and girls, you are calculating loss and gain. But there is no loss, but the gain is tremendous.
So I request you sufficiently that please try this chanting,
hare krsna hare krsna
krsna krsna hare hare
hare rama hare rama
rama rama hare hare
It is tried, it is authorized, it is from the disciplic succession of Lord Caitanya, and the first thing is that your the dirty things in your mind will be cleared. And as soon as the dirty things are cleared from your mind, you immediately become freed from all anxieties. This is the first stage. And then you will profit, then you will feel spiritual transcendental bliss, and your life will be always blissful, and you will be happy.

Please accept my respectful humble obeisances at Your lotus feet. I beg to introduce myself as an Indian monk, following the Vedic principles of religious life, and at the present, I am in the renounced order of Sannyas (aged 72 years) and preaching God consciousness all over the world. I came to America in 1965, and since then I have many followers belonging to both Christian and Jewish faiths. And I have established 8 centers of Krishna consciousness temples in the USA and Canada. In the month of September, 1968, I am scheduled to go to London on this mission, and maybe I can visit other cities of European countries.
My mission is in the line of Lord Caitanya, Who is Personified Love of Godhead, and Who advented Himself 482 years ago in India, and preached God consciousness all over the country. His mission is to revive God consciousness all over the world, on the basis of Srimad-Bhagavatam (Science of God). The principle of Srimad-Bhagavatam is that any religious faith which helps a man to develop Love of God, without any motive, and without being hampered by any material condition, is transcendental religion. And the best process or the easiest process, in this age especially, is to chant the Holy name of God. From this definition of religion as we find in the Srimad-Bhagavatam, the criterion test of religion is how it helps people to develop his dormant Love of God, which is not artificially invoked, but it is aroused from within by bona fide association of devotees and hearing about God.
Yes, whoever you tell the chant to, it is effective. You have heard it from me and my disciples, similarly I have heard it from my Guru Maharaja, and so on, and on. Because you have heard it from a pure devotee of the Lord, therefore it is transmitted from you to another. Just as an aerial message, is transmitted from one place to another, similarly, this Guru parampara system is working. My disciples are my agents, my representatives, so by hearing it from them, you are receiving it from me. And because you are a sincere soul, those who are hearing the Mantra from you are receiving it in disciplic succession, from Lord Caitanya and from Lord Krishna.
